Home ›Clock Ticking on State Budget
This winter Governor Corbett proposed a budget that represents a radical departure from the state’s long-held commitment to providing a safety net for the most vulnerable Pennsylvanians. It eliminates funding for proven, cost-effective programs that keep people off the streets and save taxpayer dollars by keeping those in need from being forced into more expensive services such as emergency rooms and homeless shelters.
It is up to the legislature to fix the budget, but time is running out. The House hopes to pass their budget bill Monday, June 4 and Legislative leaders from the House and the Senate have marked June 13th as their target deadline. And the fate of funding for these programs is still unclear.
The Housing Alliance recently released a sign-on letter with a coalition of more than 100 groups, including PA Cares for All, the AARP, the United Way and Catholic, Methodist, Lutheran, Unitarian Universalist and Jewish groups, which has received a lot of media coverage.
